From humble beginnings in 1999, as a family-owned factory on Gold Coast, BNY Trading Pty Ltd has firmly established itself leading as the only first-class ‘Australian Quarantine Abalone’ registered with the highest Grade A processor establishment in Queensland - supplier to other agriculture and food industry.

The business sources abalone from primarily Tasmanian and Victorian suppliers and transforms the product either into canned abalone or dried abalone. 


Fresh-caught abalone is received at the new purpose-built site at Arundel on the Gold Coast, where it is cleaned, sorted, and either canned or dried.

 BNY is a 100% Australian-owned business, which started to establish a high-quality and modern abalone processing plant that catered for the needs both of the domestic and overseas markets.  

Making a Difference

Abalone are typically sold fresh (refrigerated), frozen, canned or dried. We had previously developed a novel method to prepare fresh, ready-to-eat dried abalone that is packaged in a shelf-stable vacuum retortable pouch. Furthermore, feedback testing had demonstrated that the product was considered very high quality and suitable to be served in high-end restaurants in Asia. While other Australian companies produce similarly packaged products, their processes for producing abalone are different to ours. Their processes typically involve starting with freshly shucked abalone, vacuum-sealing them in plastic bags, then cooking the packaged product in a retort.  

 In contrast, we have developed a novel method whereby our abalone are shucked, dried over 6–8 weeks, and left for a further 6 months to develop the flavours. The abalone are then rehydrated from dry abalone, cooked in a large vat, then bagged and sterilised. A restaurant chef or home cook needs only to place the sealed bag into hot water for a few minutes to reheat the abalone before serving. We believe that we are the only company worldwide that has been able to successfully achieve such a process leading to a high-quality product with a three-year room-temperature shelf life.
